Rockhampton sits on both the M1 motorway and A1 carriageway routes of the Bruce Highway, which runs from Brisbane in the south to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The highway itself forms part of the National Highway 1, which circumnavigates the Australian continent, running through each capital city in Australia except Canberra.

Hiring a car in Rockhampton also allows visitors to explore some of Australia's most popular scenic drives. Australia's Country Way is the name given to the route from Rockhampton down to Sydney and takes in many sights along the Great Dividing Range, including gorgeous country towns like Tamworth, Glen Innes and Toowoomba. Rockhampton is also one of the stops along the iconic Pacific Coast Way, which runs from tropical Cairns in the north to the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast in the south.

Visiting from overseas? You will need to be aware of local traffic laws. Remember that vehicles in Australia drive on the left-hand side and that speed limits are strictly enforced using radar cameras. In addition, all occupants must wear seatbelts when driving unless a valid exemption can be proven.
