Car & Van Hire - Salerno

Enterprise car hire locations - Salerno

The Italian port city of Salerno overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. The nearest airport is Naples International, located 56 kilometres away from downtown Salerno. The airport’s Enterprise Rent-A-Car branch offers advanced bookings. There is also a branch in Salerno town, conveniently located between the train station and the cruise terminal.

What to do and see in Salerno

Arranging a car rental in Salerno and driving along the Amalfi Coast has been a bucket list item for people from all over the world since the 1950s, when the area became famous after appearing in several Hollywood movies. Due to its location and excellent tourist infrastructure, Salerno is a great base to explore well-known holiday resorts like Positano and Sorrento.

The city of Salerno itself has plenty to keep you entertained. Its ancient history is imprinted in the town’s narrow alleys, which are dotted with beautiful examples of medieval architecture. The majority of must-see landmarks are clustered around Salerno’s cathedral. These include the town’s medieval aqueduct, the archaeological museum, San Agostino Palace and Salerno’s ceramics museum.

There’s a second cluster of tourist attractions further east towards the ferry terminal. Some interesting sights here include the hand-painted murals on Via Portacatena, the luscious public gardens at Villa Comunale and Santa Teresa beach, which is also the starting point of Lungomare, Salerno’s seaside promenade.

The local cuisine is undoubtedly Mediterranean, as it strongly features ingredients like olive oil, lemon, figs, nuts and fish. Some traditional dishes worth trying include linguine with anchovies, ciambotta (a refreshing veggie stew) and ravioli with ricotta and hazelnut. You can end your meal like the locals do and indulge in a shot of limoncello, a popular liqueur with digestive properties made with locally grown lemons.

There are many restaurants and trattorias along Via del Carmine and in the historical centre between Villa Comunale gardens and the cathedral.

Make a plan to visit Arechi Castle if you’re visiting Salerno with children. At 300 metres above sea level, the castle offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Salerno and is a fun day trip for the entire family. Free parking is available on-site.

Another option for families with kids is taking a boat tour along the Amalfi Coast all the way to the pretty island of Capri. Although driving the Amalfi Coast is a must while in Salerno, these boat tours offer a different view of this spectacular stretch of coastline.

Lastly, you can drive your car or van rental in Salerno for 30 minutes and spend the day at Aquafarm, a large water park that offers endless fun from May to September.

The biggest shopping centre in Salerno is Le Cotoniere, a 4-storey shopping emporium where you’ll find local and international brands, restaurants and cinemas. In the downtown area, the main shopping area is Corso Vittorio Emanuele. In addition, there’s Drapparia – Via dei Mercanti, a busy shopping area since the Middle Ages, now home to shops selling handmade items and souvenirs.

One of the most awaited events in Salerno is the annual Carnival, celebrated every February. Other notable events include the Children’s Film Festival in Giffoni, a 30-minute drive from Salerno, which takes place at the end of July, and Ravello’s Classical Music Festival, held throughout the summer in a scenic location 18 miles west of Salerno.

Driving in Salerno

You have two options when driving from Naples Airport to Salerno. The fastest route is the A30 motorway, which gets you to downtown Salerno in under an hour. Alternatively, you can take the A3 road, which goes past Pompei. Both are toll roads with a speed limit of 130 km/h unless otherwise indicated.

In addition to the A3 and the A30, Salerno is linked with other parts of Italy via the A2 motorway. This road runs for nearly 430 kilometres between Salerno and Reggio Calabria.

In town, the most important road is La Tangenziale, which runs through the entire northern length of Salerno from the A3 junction to the city’s southern outskirts. Speed limits along this road vary every few hundred metres, so keep an eye on the traffic signs.

Road SS18 (also known as Tirrena Inferiore) runs the entire southern length of Salerno, parallel to the waterfront. This is also one of the main points of entry and exit into town when coming from Naples for those who prefer to avoid the toll road.

The Tirrena Inferiore is also important as it connects with road SS163, the famous “Costiera Amalfitana”. Driving the Costiera is a must for anyone with a car or van rental in Salerno, as the road skirts the rugged coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsula and offers breathtaking sea and mountain views.

When in Salerno, keep in mind that most of the historical centre is a video-surveilled Traffic Limited Area, which means vehicle access is limited to certain hours of the day. Avoid fines by leaving your rental car at one of the city’s public parking lots, centrally located at Piazza Giovanni Amendola, Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini and Piazza della Concordia. These are paid parking venues where hourly rates apply.
